Voice Acting Workshops w/ Crispin Freeman! (Part1)

During Spring Break, I was given such a wonderful opportunity: to take two voice acting classes with Crispin Freeman!
My friend, Stacy, was able to get us free plane tickets, thanks to her father's frequent flyer miles, & I was able to get us somewhere to stay- my dad's place! It was perfect! All we had to do was pay for the two classes, which were an easy 380$, total! There was no way we could turn this down! So, for weeks and weeks, we were extremely excited to spend a full day workshopping our voice acting skills and building our connections and foundations with 6fellow voice acting dreamers!

Archetype Class:
Stacy & I got to class 10minutes early; luckily, the building where the classes were being held were only about a 30minute drive from my dad's house. We eagerly waited for the other students and our dear teacher to make their appearance! Finally, just before 10AM hit, Crispin walked through the door followed by his wife. Also, I never knew that Crispin was married, but I have to say that Izobel is so sweet and adorable! The two of them make such a cute couple!!
Anyhoos! The point of this class was for us to figure out what type of characters we are able to portray; as Voice Actors, we will need to be able to know how to sell ourselves. Crispin brought with him audition pieces from several games (none that I've played) and we were instructed to pick two characters that we believed fit our voice type. I knew right away I needed to find little boys or young girls, this was going to be easy! Well, so I thought...
I went straight for the fantasy world and found myself a bright and uppity girl named Lolo. She seemed perfect, I'd be able to get her lines easy! Then I tried to switch it up a bit and go for a princess! I found myself in White Knight Chronicles (which, by the way, looks like a great game!) and chose Princess Cisna. I was ready to try them on the mic, even if I was a little nervous! When I got up there, I read for Lolo first. Crispin said that I had matched my voice perfectly, all I needed to do was get the emotional character, you know the acting part... Haha... So, we had a few takes, but what really took the longest time was that I spoke way too fast. Me, speaking fast?? Like I haven't heard that before! So, I tried really, really hard to slow myself down, and after a few takes, we got a good recording! Then I went for Cisna. I had matched the profile and the voice and I was able to read the lines well, but what Crispin told me made a ton of sense: I could play Cisna, but I just wasn't quite comfortable with that type of character. Izobel then made a comment that made me smile, "You're more suited for the scrappy, tom-boy girls! The ones that make fun of the boys and kickass!" Haha, well that's great 'cuz I love the scrappy characters best! ^-^
For Stacy's round one, she chose a little boy from the same game Lolo was from, but when she went up to the mic Crispin stopped her, turned to me and said, "Lisette, go ahead and read that." I was kinda surprised, but I did it and what did we learn? I would be the person playing the little kids and Stacy would usually be placed as my older sister. Before they even knew that Stacy and I had come to the classes together, they said that we needed to work together and switch characters, so we did! I gave her Cisna, and I took the little boy! I also found the character Izobel had suggested for me, Cisna's scrappy best friend, Yulie, and I loved her!
Yulie from White Knight Chronicles
(That's right! I'm a Badass NOT a Princess!)
I was the first one at the mic this time and I chose to put little Tik first. It was super easy for me to find his character, having been a crybaby when I was little, I got his lines down in one take, in the second take Crispin asked me to be more whiny and dramatic, and when we got it and he burst out saying, "Now THAT was GOLD!" I couldn't help but smile. Then it was Yulie's turn, Izobel was happy. It was obvious that the scrappy, best friend, Yulie was more my type than Cisna, and I had a lot more fun! After the first class was over, I wanted more! I loved being surrounded by fellow dreamers, and I couldn't wait till the second class to begin!
